Why It’s Taking You Longer To Heal Your Broken Heart

Healing a broken heart

I see this a lot, and it’s actually mirrored in my current life. A year after my 7-month breakup ended, I cried to my best friend “Why can’t I just BE okay already?!” Her response is something I’ll never forget, “It doesn’t work like that, Justine.”

Indeed, she was right on the money. It doesn’t work like that, especially when you are a highly sensitive person. That’s because we process emotions differently, especially over-stimulating ones. Besides a death, a broken heart is up there in over-stimulating emotions. I mean, it IS the mourning of something, the death of a relationship.

Spiritual beliefs teach us that when “bad” things happen to us, there is always a lesson to be learned. Once the lesson is learned, then you have the ability to heal and move forward with clarity, forgiveness, and grace.

However, the tricky part here is actually FINDING the lesson. What is this awfully painful experience teaching me right now?

broken heartIn order to dive really deep and figure out the answer I often have to reflect on MYSELF, and see what parts of myself are wounded. Because emotional wounds attract emotionally wounded people, your whole relationship and breakup may make a whole lot of sense now.

Therefore, self-reflection, self-actualization, self-improvement, and self-love are what can actually heal us. The more positive beliefs we have about ourselves, the more we can heal. The more self-worth you let shine bright, the more you will notice how unappealing that last relationship ACTUALLY was. Because seeing things for what they actually WERE will help you feel more and more uninterested in looking backwards.

And no, this doesn’t happen in a day, it doesn’t happen in a week, a year, or even five years. This happens at the pace your mind, body, and spirit are ready to make it happen. Time doesn’t heal wounds, what you proactively do in that time DOES.

So take it day by day, and let yourself actually feel the pain. Trying to cover it up with external sources will only delay the healing process. Focus on yourself and in time, things will start looking up :)
