Passion comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes my coaching clients are looking for a better work/life balance at their corporate gig, and sometimes they are looking to be an entrepreneur and start their own business. And then there are the clients that would absolutely love it if their worlds’ could revolve around freelance and contract work. Freelance work has so many perks, like flexible scheduling, work only when you feel inspired on your time, working from home, and work/life balance (if you want to have an easy week, you likely would have the freedom to work a 20-hour work week.)
I can smell the freedom from here!
But there is also a dark side to freelancing; NOT GETTING PAID FOR YOUR WORK.
I’ve seen it COUNTLESS times. It has happened to myself and my close friends. I’ve also noticed it happens a lot with small businesses and start-ups.
Maybe these small businesses and start-ups can’t really afford work and set up some type of scheme to get you to do the work and had every intention of never paying you.
I really can’t think of another excuse as to why you wouldn’t get paid. But in reality, there’s really no excuse to not get paid for the work you are performing.
But who is there to protect your rights? It’s not like you have a Human Resources department snuggled within the corner of your home office.
A few months ago I came across an organization called The Freelancer’s Union. They are the bomb.com when it comes to protecting the rights of freelancers. In fact, they graciously helped me attain affordable health insurance as a new entrepreneur.
But the SUPER TOTALLY awesome thing they have accomplished is passing the Freelance Isn’t Free Act into law.
I can smell justice in the air...
Just to give you an overview, the Freelance Isn’t Free Act provides protection for freelance workers against nonpayment. It mandates contracts for gigs paying over $800, and increases penalties for clients found guilty of late or non-payment.
You can learn more about it here.
The Freelancer’s Union is also an incredible source for great content focusing on all areas of freelancing, especially your rights. What an amazing organization helping people live their passions more securely and justly.
