There’s this really big myth about spirituality, and I hear it all the time being a spiritual mentor. The myth is that I have to be perfect and so spiritually enlightened I’d make the Dalai Lama look like an amateur. But that’s actually not true. I have come to understand that there are many definitions of spiritually, but being perfect isn’t one of them. I have often mentioned I grew up around religion (raised Catholic) and never felt myself drawn to the teachings and essence of it. It just uninterested me in every way. From dispassionate Catholic to straight-up atheist, nothing was giving me anything to believe in.
BOOM! Spirituality was making sure it gave me something to believe in. I couldn’t miss this message if I tried. I often call it violent, because it was confusing and frightening and all happened in a snap of the finger.
I often couldn’t explain what was happening to me, mainly because I didn’t really know myself. But sitting here years later, it all makes sense. My intuition just knew the day would come where it all made sense, I just happen to be extremely impatient. Everything always happens for a reason, there are no coincidences, and there are no accidents. That’s why it’s mainly about trust. Trust that everything will work itself out and you are being put on the path you are supposed to be on.
This is part of Universal Law, and there are many more. But I’ll save that for another time.
Check out my favorite definitions of spirituality below
Spirituality is the direct connection to soul. YES, YES, YES. Actually, intuition plays a huge part in this!! Intuition is the sixth sense we ALL have. It is the channel that connects the heart and soul. In fact, what we intuitively desire is found in spirit, also known as the soul. In fact, the word inspire comes directly from ‘in spirit’. Pay attention to what inspires you, there’s a reason your heart] lights up with passion for what inspires you. Also, a lot of spiritually aware people tend to be very clear on what their soul wants. This helps with inner peace as well as genuine happiness that does not rely on external things.
Spirituality is the balance of mind, body, spirit. This is also another one of my favorites! It’s absolutely true, in order to feel spiritually aligned, we must have balanced chakras (7 main ones that run up your spine). These chakras are a mix of balancing mind, body, and spirit. When we feel aligned, we feel more in control and spiritual. There have been times in my life where I have actually FELT my chakras out of line.
Spirituality is the unlearning of everything you’ve been taught. This is my absolute favorite and what I find to be the truest. Many of us have grown up to believe only what we’ve been taught. I remember being on a cruise with some family members last year, and my aunt mentioned that I ‘questioned everything.’ My first thought was, ‘Why was that a bad thing?’ Truthfully, it’s not. You should question what is put in the food you put in your mouth, the childhood of the person you’re thinking of spending your life with, the history of the person you’re voting for, etc. Questioning everything is healthy and knowledge is power. When you have the knowledge, you can then make the decision for yourself. I think you will find, that most things that you have been taught are in fact, not true. This is where intuition comes in again. You can then weight intuition vs. these teachings. What does your soul want vs what others want from you? The choice is yours. Happiness is actually a choice. People don’t realize that.
There are many more definitions of spirituality but these are most definitely my favorite three. I actually really like that there isn’t one clear-cut definition of spirituality. Because the truth is, the best things in life can’t be seen or proven.
