Looking Forward To Your Future While Living Presently

The universe laughs when you make plans

I remember being in college and smack in the middle of class daydreaming about what my life would be like. Graduate, get a good job, get an awesome apartment in the city, and be in a healthy relationship. No rejections, no hardships, no failures, and certainly no roadblocks.

“HHAAHAHHA” That’s the sound of the laughing at me. How sweet and innocently naïve my younger self was. I could have sworn life was all unicorns and rainbows…..

The most anxious girl in the world

My anxiety used to be so bad and out of control, I used to show physical symptoms. My eyelashes used to twitch, my hair used to fall out, and my hands would shake. If you are feeling anxious, you are not living presently.

Live presently? I didn’t even know where to start, and worse, not even sure what it really meant. After studying Buddhism and spirituality I finally got a good grasp on it. Living presently means to freely live your life in the NOW. Not contemplating about the past, not contemplating about the future.

But what about my future goals?

Exactly. Living presently has its perks and is a beautiful way to live, but what’s so wrong with looking forward to your future? There isn’t anything wrong, as long as you don’t LIVE there.

So what does this mean exactly? My interpretation is to live presently to ACHIEVE the goals, not spend your time with your mind in them. The time is NOW, and goals are actually achieved in the NOW, not in the future. Think about it….

So thinking about the future is great, but living in the present is more advantageous to your goals anyway. Before I go I’ll leave you with this inspirational quote:

“If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present.”
